I miss this event last year because i was studying in Aussie. But this year, i'm so glad to be back here as a liaison officer for one international teams. 2 years ago, i drew the team from Boston, Double Bacon Cheese Burger, funky name eh? This year, Philippines from De La Salle University, Manilla.
I was given a small team this year because Gina (who got Macao) and I had to cover two jobs over the 2 race days (being a liaison and time keepers). So, we were given high school kids as assistants. Probably not too good of an idea as those kids obviously did not enjoy their jobs as liaisons and therefore, did not do well.
I personally loved my team this year more than the last one i got due to the fact that they were uni students, so we clicked. DBCB consisted of adults, Gen X, not much of a conversation.
The down side of this years event was that we were place in Tanjung Bungah Hotel. Everything is small (rooms, bathrooms, restaurants, lobby) and it's far from any source of entertainment, shopping and the race site. Downer! Hopefully next year, they'll go back to Holiday Inn because it's tonnes better there, especially their breakfast. I shall not ramble too much. Below are the pictures i snapped during the training day and first race day.
I've done dragon boat events for 3 years now. This is the closest i have been to the boats. My next mission is to actually ride one. I don't think i have the strength to row one.
Patrick, Peter and Gisele from DLSU. I absolutely L-O-V-E their uniform including their jackets. Best uniforms i've personally seen in 3 years.
Gina and I at the judges deck. That place is like an oven when there's no breeze.
Sunblock, super important. Still got pretty tanned even when i re-applied every 3 hours or so.
Saturday morning, barely any clouds in the sky. Bummer. Sign of a super hot day.
Photography enthusiasts that brave the scorching afternoon sun just to snap photos of the teams in action. Crazeee
I had to time the 3rd and 4th place boats. Nice numbers.
DLSU took home the gold for the Junior Under-23 250m Small Boat category. See those jackets? They're so pretty. Varsity chic-ness.
Nomnomnom...Dinner time! Food provided by the hotel wasn't good. This RM10 banana leaf rice was tonnes better than the overpriced stuff the hotel provided to the race officials.
I'd love to get this team again next year if they do come back for a second round :) And next time, no more double jobs. I'll just stick to being the liaison :)
